Come fare ?

Eccome come:

Fantastico no ? Eccome come funziona:

How to quickly find dangling dimensions in a SolidWorks Drawing

Some time ago a customer has submitted me a request : he discovered that there were many old SolidWorks drawings with dangling dimensions. Customer did not which drawings had this problem and how many were they: problably there were hundreds of drawings to check. What could he possibily do? Maybe Checking them one by one ?

Customer want's really happy...but luckyly he changed his mood when I explained him that SolidWorks would come to his aid and would have solved the problem with two tools : SolidWorks Design Cheker and SolidWorks Task Scheduler.

Design Checker is a tool that allows you to perform a series of check against a standard defined by the user: for example, you might want to check if drafting meets the standard set forth by the company on the font, the style of the arrows or style of the annotations , etc. Companies like General Motors have always had within them the professional design checker whose job was to verify that the designs that were released adhered to strict standards imposed by the automaker. Today, fortunately modern CAD systems such as SolidWorks offer tools to automate these controls.

Design Cheker does much more, and allows you to make many kinds of useful checks on your SolidWorks Drawings:
- Check if the dimension text has been forced
- Check if there are any overlapping dimensions that would make the design difficult to read
- Verify that there's correct number of decimal places (e.g. two decimal places)
- Check if there are dangling dimensions
- Check that there are no views in "shaded with edges" style set so by mistake
- Check the distance between the beginning of the dimension's reference line and model geometry
- ... and much more

Did you know that SolidWorks Design Cheker is able to carry out checks also for parts and assemblies ?
- Check which parts have been assigned a certain material (eg steel S235JR )
- Verify that the sheet metal components are using the correct bend table (otherwise these parts might not show correct size when flattened)
- Check which parts have errors in the feature manager tree or what assemblies have mate errors
- Check in which assemblies there are interfering components
- Check if parts have fully defined sketches (very important) !
- Check if there are parts in which sketches are referencing edges of chamfers or fillets... if those fillets/chamfers are deleted sketch might lose references !
- ... and much more

So this customer would have solved the problem by using SolidWorks Design Cheker on a SolidWorks drawing to find dangling dimensions. The first video above shows how.

Well, the customer was very pleased because he didn't have to go crazy looking for dangling dimensions in his SolidWorks drawing because SolidWorks would have shown them to him.

But he wanted more, he wanted to know in which drawings were there dangling dimensions, because he it would have been too much time consuming to check drawings of his archive one by one.
So SolidWorks helped him with another tool: SolidWorks Task Scheduler: it is a tool that allows you to schedule a series of operations to be performed in batch on your archive. Here are few examples:
- Print drawings
- Export files in various formats (PDF , DXF , DWG, edrawings , STEP, IGES , etc.).
- Import files
- Create drawings
- Launch some renderings or rendered animations
- Launch SolidWorks Design Cheker controls on your archive
- ... and more

So what I did was proposing customer to use the SolidWorks Task Scheduler to schedule a check to find dangling dimensions in the drawings of his archive. When finished SolidWorks creates a report that shows which files have dangling dimensions and how many dangling dimensions there are. Cool, isn't it? The second video above shows how it works.

SolidWorks Design Cheker and SolidWorks Task Scheduler are part of SolidWorks Professional licenses. Probably if you have a SolidWorks Base license you may have noticed that you have SolidWorks Task Scheduler, but in that case you can schedule a single operation that is converting files to the latest SolidWorks release (example: convert all files to SolidWorks 2014).

Do you need to perform operations like those I've described ? Maybe it's the right time for an upgrade to SolidWorks Professional. Isn't it enough to take the decision ? Well, keep in mind that SolidWorks Professional contains additional useful features for your daily work in the technical department: create photorealistic renderings, recognize features on models imported from other CAD systemes so that you can edit them, evaluate component costing, use eDrawings Professional, Toolbox, and much more!

Treeview: an utility to graphically display your assembly structure

It's been a few days since Hawk Ridge Systems has released an utility called Treeview. It is an interesting experiment that produced an utility that allows you to graphically display your assembly structure with sub-assemblies and components in a hierarchical way. With just a glance you can have an immediate understanding of how your assembly is structured.

This utility, although fascinating, should be considered a simple experiment on a concept that probably you will meet as a standard feature in any CAD system in the future. It's very unlikely that this tool as it is will fit in the design process of a company.

Nuovamacut offers an innovative tool that you can use right away, even today: the WebViewer for EPDM. Would you like to be able to access the SolidWorks Enterprise PDM vault from any place (your home, the motorway, the airport, etc..) and from any device (Android phone or i-Phone, Tablet, laptop)? Would you like to perform the consulting operations that you are used to operate on the desktop version of the PDM (data card, where used, visualization of the 3D model) ? Today you can with WebViewr for EPDM: look at the video above showing a demo.

Why won't SolidWorks show me surface bodies in my section view ?

It often happens that in the layout of large plants there are some machines that have not been modeled by us but have been sent from a supplier or a subcontractor. Sometimes, for reasons of confidentiality those CAD models may have been transformed into surface bodies.

These surface bodies are automatically shown in orthogonal projections, but when you create a section view they suddenly disappear!

The above movie explains how to show them in the section view.

These surface bodied are not actually cut by the section line in SolidWorks 2013 and earlier.
A new feature in SolidWorks 2014 that has been requested by thousands of users is the ability to section suface bodies!

Impact Simulation with SolidWorks Simulation

You didn't think it would be possible for SolidWorks, eh ? It is actually, because SolidWorks Simulation can perform non linear dynamic analysis (e.g. impact of an object on another one).
